Hackers 'kill' Obama in I-Day hoax
Hackers broke into the conservative media network's Twitter feed and issued a series of six tweets reporting that Obama had been shot to death at a restaurant in Iowa and the shooter was unknown.
One tweet, using Obama's Twitter handle to inform him of his own "death,'' read, "President @BarackObama assassinated, 2 gunshot wounds would have proved too much. It's sad 4th for #america #obamadead RIP.''
Another tweet anointed vice-president Joe Biden as the successor, saying, "We wish @joebiden the best of luck as our new President of the United States. In such a time of madness, there's light at the end of the tunnel.''
President Obama was safely ensconced in the White House with plans to spend the July Fourth holiday at a barbecue on the South lawn with military families and administration staffers, followed by a concert and viewing of Independence Day fireworks.
A group connected to the hacker collective Anonymous calling itself "scriptkiddies' ' claimed credit for the attack, mocking Fox News "because we figured their security would be just as much of a joke as their reporting".
In a brief statement posted on its website, Fox News said it "regrets any distress the false tweets may have created' ' and said the hacking is being investigated. The attack is the latest in the series of wanton hacking of corporate and government websites by so-called "hacktivists" .
